Earthquake jolts Sylhet

Sylhet, along with several northeastern districts of the country, was struck by an earthquake that measured magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were felt in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Bhutan and China.

The tremors were felt at 4:47am on Monday (January 5), according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) and the International Seismological Organization.

Several international agencies, including the US Geological Survey (USGS), said the quake was only 10 kilometres below the surface.

The epicentre was just 4 km west of the city of Dhing in the Indian state of Assam and 76 km northeast of Guwahati, the capital of Assam.

Due to its geographical location, the Sylhet region is very close to the centre.
