3 kidnapped tourists rescued in Sundarbans

Law enforcement agencies have rescued three tourists, including the owner of an eco-resort, who were kidnapped for ransom while visiting the Sundarbans from Dakop area in Khulna.

The rescue operation, a joint effort by police and the Coast Guard, took place at around 8:30pm on Sunday (Jan 4) in Banisanta area of Dakop Upazila.

Several armed forest robbers involved in the kidnapping were arrested, Dakop police OC Atikur Rahman said.

Following the rescue, a case was filed with Dakop Police Station by the resort owner’s son, Shantanu Bachhar, alleging a ransom demand of Tk 20 lakh and naming the forest robbers.

The tourists were abducted on Friday afternoon from Kenur Khal near Dhangmari range in the Sundarbans.

Two of the victims, Sohel and Jony, are residents of Dhaka, along with the eco-resort owner, Shripati Bachhar.

Two female tourists who were also abducted were later released.

OC Atikur Rahman said the rescue was possible through coordinated operations by the Coast Guard, river police, and local police.

Detailed information will be shared in a press briefing later, he added.
